Ocean Trading's environmental programs

1

Obtaining KES

To manage environmental system, we have chosen a third party audit system called Kyoto Environmental Management System Standard. We made a Environmental Declaration in October 2021, and was registered as KES Step 2 registered organization in May 2022. Step 2 is a management system equivalent to ISO14001. Our company policy is “Sanpo Yoshi”, which means that our business must benefit three parties; the seller, buyer, and society. In addition to this, we hereby add a fourth element, “benefiting the Earth”. We will strive to continue business based upon this philosophy.

  • ASC CoC Certification

In consideration to the global marine environment, we are actively handling seafood which has been certified by MSC, which indicates that the seafood has been caught by sustainable fisheries, or ASC, which indicates that the seafood has been farmed in a sustainable environment. We were the first company as a salmon importer to obtain ASC CoC certification in Japan.

To achieve an eco-friendly seafood distribution,
we import fish that has already been processed into fillets.

By filleting the fish in the supplier's country, we do not have to import the unnecessary parts of the fish, such as the head, bones, and skin, which were discarded in Japan. This accounts for a total of 40% of the whole fish weight. Due to this, we can reduce the weight of the air cargo we import, which contributes to a lower consumption of aviation fuel.

Renewable Energy
4

Collaboration of Renewable Energy and Agriculture

If solar power is to be generated on farmland, the Japanese Agricultural Land Law requires farming to be carried out underneath the solar panels. Since it is shaded under panels, the variety of plants that can be cultivated are limited, but blueberries are said to be the most profitable among them. By selling products related to blueberry cultivation, we hope to increase renewable energy and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases.
